NASA Pumpkin Carving Contest

At NASA, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, not everything is about space travel and engineering, it is also about having fun and still applying their mission, their vision:

To reach for new heights and reveal the unknown so that what we do and learn will benefit all humankind.

NASA PUMPKIN Engineering

The employees at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory apply that vision even when they are having fun, playing and pushing their limits in engineering and other sciences beyond what we might think is possible, that includes when working with the delicious vegetable: the pumpkin. Every year NASA employee competes for one hour for who makes the best pumpkin. They showcase their pumpkin carving skills with an engineering twist at the NASA Pumpkin Carving Contest held every Halloween. From electric drills, memory chips, lasers to computers to control that is how they do it at NASA.

Do not worry–they assure us in this video that your tax dollars are not used for pumpkin carving. The employees purchase the materials needed for the contest, and they only take one hour for the contest, hopefully, their lunch hour.

See what awesome things these engineers do with pumpkins. It is a pumpkin eat pumpkin world!

Do not try this at home, definitely not for children to play with sharp tools or drills. Below is the movie. Enjoy!
